Listening Post
Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen

Listening Post was the first collaboration between Ben Rubin and Mark Hansen. It provides a window onto the often sordid world of online chat rooms, displaying messages or speaking them on a speech synthesis system. It was first shown at BAM in 2001 and is permanently on display at the San Jose Museum of Art and the London Science Museum.

Parallel designed the electronics and software for the display modules, linking the display computer to a curtain of vacuum fluorescent displays; we built (and rebuilt) the upper support channel on which the strands hang.
